How to add a book module
Putting Together Your Own Book Module
This page is designed to help you in building your own book module for a story that you find philosophically interesting. It is organized in a series of easy to follow steps.
Contents |
[edit] Step One:Assembling Your Materials
There are a few things you will need to put together before you can begin to make a book module.
The first thing you will want to have on hand is some basic information about the book:
- the title, the author, and the publisher.
You will also need each of the following:
- A brief summary of the story and why it is philosophically interesting
- A short philosophical introduction : a review of the topics of philosophical interests and how they emerge in the context of the story
- A set of philosophical questions designed to get kids into a discussion about the philosophical topics discussed in the introduction
- A collection of images from the book in jpeg format, one of which should be the cover of the book. Click here for additional instructions for scanning and uploading images
[edit] Step Two:Starting Your Book Module Page
- Click in the box below where it says "The Name of Book", delete the text, and type in the name of the book for which you want to make the book module.
- Then click the Create Book Module button.
[edit] Step Three: Filling in Your Book Module Template
- Once you click the button you will be taken to a template page.
- At the top of the page in bold black font it will say "Editing" followed by the title of the story you previously entered into the box. This page will become the webpage for your book module.
- Now replace the text that appears on your new page with the information you collected before you began. For example, where it says author, delete the name "John Doe" and type in the name of the author of the book. Each subheading of the page corresponds to a piece of the materials you collected earlier. For each of these, simply delete the Latin text, and replace it with your work.
- Once you have all of your text in place, you can then add your images. To add jpg files to your book module, you must upload to the site from your computer first. This is done using the upload file link in the Toolbox (lower left). For a full account of posting images on your page, and place it in the location of the page you want it, click here
- Remember that you always need to save your changes to your page before you quit, or even if you exit the page to view another.
- Be careful, some of the text on your new page is filler, while other text is important formatting code.
- Please save your page as soon as you create it and continue to save your changes periodically as you work. Nothing will be saved unless you have clicked on the "Save page" button. Navigating away without saving might cause you to lose all your work. Remember "Show previw" does NOT save anything!
- When in doubt, you can consult other book modules by looking at their source code in the editing mode.
[edit] Step Four: Editing and Publishing Your Module
- Once you have gotten your book module completed and looking how you want it, it will be on the website, but it still will not appear on the book modules page. At this point, you should email Tom with the url of your module. (This is to make sure that you have it in the right form.) He will get back to you with suggestions for revision. Once he has done that, you should revise your module.
- When you are happy with all the revisions, you need to add two or more lines to the module and they will list your module on the Book Module page in the appropriate spots (It is actually commented out in your template, you can just remove the surrounding "<!-- and -->").
Following this pattern (from The Bee Man of Orn), create these tags for your book module:

- Please note that if your book begins with "A" or "The", you need to omit the leading "A" or "The". For example, the book "The Rabbit in the Moon" should have the tag in the following way.

- Once you do this, your module will be available for public view! Hoorray!
[edit] Simple Formatting
Here are some simple formatting that you may find useful. Remember that if you want to borrow any formatting from a page, you can always click on "edit" to view its source code.

Add this line right before the paragraph where you want the image to be. Remember that you need to upload the image into the site first. For a detailed complete instruction of scanning and uploading images, click here.
